What is Spatz?
Need a different introduction. Stating also that it is the only adjustable intragastric balloon for weight loss. The inventor is Jeff Brooks.
When is a Spatz procedure indicated?
The Spatz procedure is indicated for individuals struggling with obesity or related metabolic disorders who have not found success with conventional weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. Individuals eligible for the Spatz procedure typically have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above and may be dealing with concurrent health conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or obstructive sleep apnoea. Moreover, those contemplating the Spatz procedure must demonstrate a dedication to implementing enduring lifestyle modifications to bolster their weight loss endeavours and enhance their general well-being.
How is a Spatz procedure performed?
Under the expert guidance of Dr Andrew Viljoen, the Spatz procedure is performed with precision and care. The procedure is Endoscopic procedure under sedation. During the procedure, Dr Viljoen inserts the deflated Spatz balloon into the stomach with an endoscope
Once correctly positioned within the stomach, the balloon is infused with a sterile saline solution, expanding to occupy space and trigger a feeling of fullness, consequently curbing food intake. One of the key advantages of the Spatz balloon is its adjustability, allowing Dr Viljoen to tailor the size and volume of the balloon to each patient's individual needs. This adjustability also enables ongoing monitoring and optimization of the effectiveness of the balloon throughout the patient's weight loss journey. After a period of approximately six to twelve months, the Spatz balloon is deflated and safely removed, usually through a simple outpatient procedure.
